While summer opportunities won’t start for another 5 or 6 months, the application deadlines are already here!

Opportunities abound, including classes and internships at national laboratories, universities, and in industry. For a broad sampling, check out the lists provided by Science magazineScience.govWired, and the American Physical Society.

One great way for U.S. undergraduates to gain research experience is through a National Science Foundation program called Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). REU sites are all over the country and may also have an international component. If you are looking for a local program, consider also speaking to teachers and school career counselors, who often have the best sense of what opportunities are available (e.g., the Girls Go Techknow  program in Westchester County, NY).

Last year, Under the Microscope provided a list of 8 excellent summer opportunities that are either female-only or strongly encourage the participation of women and girls. Most of those programs are continuing again in 2011. The exception is the Iowa State University summer internship program, which has been discontinued after 23 years.

Below is a list of upcoming deadlines for some of our top internships, as well as a few other cool opportunities you might want to consider.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

AAAS offers several internship opportunities in both science writing (with Science magazine) and science and policy programs. Most of these internships last 3 months or longer during regular semester and are open to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent grads. Science and technology policy position are unpaid but may be used for coarse credit, and writing internships include some compensation.

Application deadline: March 1, 2011

AWIS Internship Program

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) hosts a summer program that was one of our original Top Internships. They continue to offer a variety of internships that introduce both undergrad and graduate students to various aspects of science policy.

The Museum of Science in Boston
